CU Summer Scholars - Environmental Sustainability through Parks and Recreation

This week-long course introduces participants to the thriving and exciting career field of parks and tourism. This field allows people to find great jobs in extraordinary places doing things that they are personally passionate about, all while protecting the environment. Much of the time in this course will be devoted to learning about parks and tourism through a variety of experiences. This will include several visits to local, state, and national park and tourism sites, including the Clemson University Experimental Forest, Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail, and Table Rock State Park. These experiences will be combined with activities such as hiking, biking, an outdoor skills challenge, species identification, application of technology (i.e., GPS, counting equipment, and field and wearable cameras) for tracking visitor use, a trail sustainability assessment, and a service-learning project with a community park agency. Students will explore topics such as environmental values, biological preservation, biodiversity, greenways, resource conservation, recreation ecology, sustainable tourism, the importance of recreation and play to society, and mechanisms of land protection. Students will leave the course having prepared a professional presentation (including a video of their experiences captured with a wearable camera) and taking a trip to the Ellicott Rock Wilderness Area of Sumter National Forest.
