Camp River Ranch - On Belay
The rock climbing program at Girl Scout Camp River Ranch is a great way for any girl to challenge herself in a fun and rewarding way. Rock climbing is an international recreational sport that challenges individuals to push their perceived mental and physical limits. All rock climbers in the River Ranch program are fitted with proper safety equipment that includes harnesses and helmets and are attached to ropes managed by a belayer or belay team.
Participants spend time early in the week at our on-site outdoor climbing wall, learning about safety equipment, climbing commands, and techniques. Under the supervision of our qualified staff., they practice a technique that supports the climber, managing the rope attached to her, called belaying. Participants can choose their level of challenge, with the option to attempt an over-hang or set other challenges for themselves. All gear and equipment is provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own helmet, harness or climbing shoes. While rock climbing can be tailored to various levels of fitness, it is strenuous and requires the ability to walk on rough terrain for short distances to the climbing location. Participants should be reasonably fit and not afraid of high places.
Perfect for the beginner or intermediate climber, this program teaches the basics of climbing at our on-site climbing wall and culminates in a day of climbing with professional guides just outside of North Bend, WA. North Bend is a popular climbing location with 27 seperate climbing walls and over 250 different routes, some considered the best in the state. Campers and their counselors depart camp shortly after breakfast one day late in the week to make the short drive. They will meet with professional guides, gear up with quality safety equipment, and take a short hike up to the routes selected by the guides. Under the direction of the guides and the staff, the girls take turns climbing and belaying each other, challenging themselves mentally and physically in this rewarding and empowering activity. The group will return to River Ranch in time for dinner that evening.
