The teenage years for individuals with disabilities can be a difficult time. Often times their able bodied peers have begun steps on life after high school that they may be struggling to achieve. In Quest’s Camp Thunderbird’s teen programs, our program is centered around the idea of focusing our teen campers on what they CAN do versus what they cannot. Providing opportunities to enhance independence, to develop social skills and to acquire necessary daily living skills away from parents/guardians can all be done at camp. Our program is successful in reaching these goals with our teens in large part to our team making the learning fun. While these goals are a focus, our camp program implements in a fun, enjoyable manner that makes it conducive to learning for our teen participants. These goals are also more easily achieved due to our teens taking on the challenges together, forming a unique bond that is formed in part due to campers being able to relate to one another’s struggles and challenges.
