Founded in 1921, Camp Fernwood offers a traditional all girls camping experience on our 100 acre property - tucked away amidst pines and open meadows, and bordered by a beautiful 4400 acre fresh water lake.  Camp Fernwood focuses on nurturing the whole child in a safe and supportive environment that fosters social and emotional growth, as well as activity skill development.  We practice simplicity and kindness - living and working together in the beautiful Maine outdoors, supporting each other and building life long friendships. Our approach has a liberal arts feel.  We attract children with many different skills and interests - athletes, artists, actors, dancers, and those who just love the friendship and experience of living and growing in the out of doors.    We are a medium sized camp with 220 girls and 160 staff.  We consider this the perfect size - small enough that everyone knows each other by name, but also a large enough population to field competitive teams in all of our different field sports.   We work hard to ensure that all of our activities are of a high level of sophistication and that we are able to accommodate as many girls as wish to enroll in each particular activity - especially those that are the most popular.      Overall, our programming is scheduled, but also somewhat elective, meaning, that aside from a core of required activities (swimming, tennis, canoeing), girls choose activites at home in advance of camp (with the help of their parents), choosing a variety of electives to round out each their schedules, making sure they are doing all the things they want to do at camp.  Our schedule is nicely structured with 2 scheduled and 1 open activity periods in the morning and 3 scheduled activities in the afternoon, so while the elective aspect gives kids (with your help) a feeling of choice, the scheduling provides the structure to their day and allows us to know where each camper is throughout her day.  Each week is punctuated with an all day out of camp "trip day" to experience Maine on a variety of different adventurous trips.
