Cabrillo Summer Youth Program - Kuumbwa Jazz Camp
For over 25 years Kuumbwa's Summer Jazz Camp has been a destination for dedicated young musicians to learn about the thrilling creativity and limitless possibility of Jazz! Over nine days of study, listening, and collaboration, this camp covers jazz, improvisation, and jazz appreciation, and will help students grow as musicians. Students will receive one-on-one and group instruction by professional music educators using innovative teaching techniques in the state-of-the-art Cabrillo Performing Arts complex. The camp focuses on live performance, basic improvisation, theory, soloing concepts and phrasing, along with jazz history and appreciation. In addition, each day students from both grade-level groups come together for an hour of cookies, and collaborative, guided musical experience.
We conclude the camp on the final Thursday with a student performance on the famous Kuumbwa Jazz Center stage!
All students are required to know at least 3 major scales and have experience with their instrument. It is preferred, but not necessary, that students know their circle of fifths. In addition, guitarists and pianists must have the ability to read standard chord symbols and preferably know their triads. Drummers must know standard jazz rhythms.
In order to participate students must complete the following survey immediately after registration:
